In 1939, Babe was invited to play in a golf tournament at the North Conway Country Club in New Hampshire. His daughter Julia accompanied him on his trip where she met her future husband, and in 1940, she became co-owner of Cranmore Mountain Lodge in Kearsarge, NH when she married the owner, Richard Flanders. On one of his visits to the lodge to see Julia, Ruth was looking for something to do. Given his well known love of food, he was no stranger to the kitchen he soon found himself working on a load of recently delivered green tomatoes with their cook, Mrs Burroughs. Out of this collaboration, this sweet piccalilli relish was born.
