Description

Vanilla planifolia otherwise known as Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla, named after 2 islands in the Indian ocean noted for cultivating the crop. Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia) is by far the most popular of the 3 cultivated vanilla species - Vanilla planifolia, Vanilla tahitiensis and Vanilla pompona. Vanilla bean pods are graded after they are harvested, conditioned and ready for use. The grading is based on moisture content, length of the pod and lack of dehiscence/wholesomeness of appearance. High moisture content, long, oily and dark seed pods with no splits/dehisces are given the highest grade, A, the Gourmet grade. The Gourmet grade/Prime grade/Grade A, typically has about 30% moisture content, are 5” or longer and 1lb contains between 100 -120 pods. The grade B beans have about 15-25% moisture content, may have some blemishes and 1lb contains about 140-160 bean pods. The conditioned fruit seed pod with the vanilla flavor houses thousands of tiny, black seeds. The pods and the seeds are both useful for culinary purposes.

  • Q: What are the benefits of using Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans? A: Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans are renowned for their rich aroma and flavor, making them the top choice for culinary uses. These premium Grade A pods are plump, oily, and dark brown, enhancing desserts, beverages, and baking with their captivating taste.
  • Q: How should I store organic vanilla beans to maintain their freshness? A: To maintain the freshness of your organic vanilla beans, store them in an airtight bag in a cool, dry place. Avoid refrigeration as it can cause the beans to lose moisture and flavor. Proper storage can extend their shelf life for about a year.

  • Q: What is the difference between Grade A and Grade B vanilla beans? A: Grade A vanilla beans have a higher moisture content (around 30%), are longer than 5 inches, and have a rich, oily appearance, making them the gourmet choice. Grade B beans, with 15-25% moisture, may have some blemishes and are typically used for extracts rather than direct culinary use.
  • Q: How can I use Madagascar vanilla beans in my cooking and baking?
