Description

Vanilla planifolia otherwise known as Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla, named after 2 islands in the Indian ocean noted for cultivating the crop. Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia) is by far the most popular of the 3 cultivated vanilla species - Vanilla planifolia, Vanilla tahitiensis and Vanilla pompona. Vanilla bean pods are graded after they are harvested, conditioned and ready for use. The grading is based on moisture content, length of the pod and lack of dehiscence/wholesomeness of appearance. High moisture content, long, oily and dark seed pods with no splits/dehisces are given the highest grade, A, the Gourmet grade. The Gourmet grade/Prime grade/Grade A, typically has about 30% moisture content, are 5” or longer and 1lb contains between 100 -120 pods. The grade B beans have about 15-25% moisture content, may have some blemishes and 1lb contains about 140-160 bean pods. The conditioned fruit seed pod with the vanilla flavor houses thousands of tiny, black seeds. The pods and the seeds are both useful for culinary purposes.

They enhance the flavor of ice cream, beverages, coffee, and can also be used to make homemade vanilla extract.
  • Q: How should I store my vanilla beans for maximum freshness? A: To maintain the freshness of your Madagascar Vanilla Beans, store them in an airtight bag in a cool, dry place. Avoid refrigeration, as it can cause them to lose moisture and flavor. Proper storage can extend their shelf life up to one year.
  • Q: What distinguishes Grade A Madagascar Vanilla Beans from other grades? A: Grade A Madagascar Vanilla Beans are known for their high moisture content, oily texture, and dark-brown color. They are at least 6 inches long and are densely filled with seeds, making them the top choice for culinary applications compared to Grade B beans, which have lower moisture and may have blemishes.
  • Q: Are these vanilla beans organic and non-GMO? A: Yes, our Madagascar Vanilla Beans are certified USDA organic and non-GMO. They are sourced directly from peasant farmers in Madagascar, ensuring fair trade practices and high-quality beans.
  • Q: Can I use these vanilla beans to make vanilla extract? A: Absolutely! Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Beans are ideal for making homemade vanilla extract due to their rich flavor profile. Simply split the pods and soak them in alcohol to extract the delightful vanilla essence.
