Description

To Cook: Sort and rinse. Add 1 part barley to 3 cups water and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer until tender, approximately 1-2 hours. Because it is a true whole grain, hulless barley requires a fairly long cooking time; however, you can reduce this by pre-soaking the grain for 8-10 hours, or overnight. Pre-soaking will reduce the cooking time by half. Suggestions: 1. A favorite soup grain, barley is also a great addition to chili, stews, casseroles and salads. 2. Barley may substituted for rice or other grains in any recipe. 3. Pair barley with green beans, fresh peas, mushrooms, and onions. 4. Grind barley into a flour to be added to baked goods. 46 grams of whole grain per serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What is hulless barley and how is it different from pearled barley? A: Hulless barley is a whole grain that naturally loses its outer hull during harvesting, retaining the bran and germ, which enhances its nutritional profile. In contrast, pearled barley has had its hull removed and is polished, resulting in a loss of fiber and nutrients.
  • Q: How do I cook organic hulless barley? A: To cook hulless barley, sort and rinse the grains, then add 1 part barley to 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for about 1-2 hours until tender. Pre-soaking the barley for 8-10 hours can reduce the cooking time by half.
  • Q: Can I use hulless barley as a substitute for rice in recipes? A: Yes, hulless barley can be used as a substitute for rice in various recipes. It adds a unique texture and flavor to dishes like soups, stews, casseroles, and salads.
  • Q: What are the health benefits of consuming hulless barley? A: Hulless barley is rich in protein, fiber, and essential minerals, making it a nutritious choice. It has a low glycemic index, which may be beneficial for those managing blood sugar levels, and its gluten structure allows some individuals with gluten intolerance to consume it safely.
  • Q: How should I store organic hulless barley for optimal freshness? A: To maintain the freshness of organic hulless barley, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. For longer shelf life, you can refrigerate or freeze it, which helps preserve its nutritional value.
