Description

Used in Asia for centuries, star anise is most famous as an ingredient in the Chinese five-spice mix. Aptly referred to as Star Anise due to its appearance and flavor, this prized spice is the seed pod from the fruit of Illicium Verum, a type of evergreen shrub. The seed pods grow in the shape of an eight-point star and host similar flavor properties of anise. Star anise is not the same as anise, but because the flavor is so similar (due to the shared flavoring compound, anethole), the two are often used interchangeably in dishes. The spice has commonly been used for both medicinal and culinary purposes. It is often present in braises, soups, stews, pickling, candying, and much more. In European kitchens and recipes, star anise is used for a plethora of baking and flavor applications: duck, tea, honey hamsÑyou name it, star anise plays a co-starring role. These wonderful little ninja stars of the spice world, are an amazing example of a tiny product that packs a punch and a kick. Star anise pods are often described as having a flavor and aroma profile of black licorice but are also sweet and spicy and should be used in complimentary moderation so as not to overpower a dish or recipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What is star anise and how is it used in cooking? A: Star anise is a spice that originates from the seed pods of the Illicium verum tree, resembling an eight-point star. It is commonly used in cooking for its sweet and spicy flavor, making it a key ingredient in dishes like soups, stews, and braises, as well as in Chinese five-spice mix.
  • Q: How should I store whole star anise pods for maximum freshness? A: To maintain the freshness of whole star anise pods, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored, they can last for an extended period, retaining their flavor and aroma.
  • Q: Can I grind whole star anise pods, and how does it affect flavor? A: Yes, whole star anise pods can be ground in a spice grinder. Grinding them fresh releases more of their natural oils and enhances their flavor, providing a more potent taste compared to pre-ground options.
  • Q: What are some recipe ideas using star anise? A: Star anise can be used in a variety of recipes, including braised meats, teas, and baked goods. It's excellent in flavoring duck, honey hams, and even in pickling solutions, adding a unique aromatic quality.
  • Q: Is star anise the same as anise seed? A: No, star anise and anise seed are not the same, although they share similar flavor profiles due to the compound anethole. Star anise has a more complex taste and is often used in different culinary contexts compared to anise seed.
